Audi-Sauber's transition to a customer power unit philosophy of its own design has produced a quick over-one-lap package — quick enough for SQ3 in sprint qualifying, where teammate Gabriel Bortoleto also made the cut — but a car that loses places dramatically off the line and fades through long stints. "The Audis have had really poor starts, really poor reliability. So they're dropping down the order," Gallagher noted. "Weirdly, qualifying seems to be their strongest point. And that's only one lap. It can't go wrong over one lap."
Hülkenberg's points-less record sits awkwardly against a teammate whose own SQ3 run on Friday was hailed as a breakthrough. Bortoleto qualified P12 in Canada — directly behind his teammate — and has shown in recent weekends that he can extract more from the Audi over a race stint than the more experienced German. The pattern of qualifying gains evaporating after the lights go out is starting to look like Audi's defining problem of the season, not Hülkenberg's personal one.
There is still time. Round five of 2026 has only just been completed, and the F1 calendar is long. But Hülkenberg's quote earlier this month — "you don't have to watch" — directed at 2026-regulation critics now sits next to a personal points column that may need a wet Sunday in Montreal to finally tick over. With rain hazard declared for race day, a chaotic 70-minute affair on a slippery Île Notre-Dame might prove to be the route by which the Hülkenberg curse breaks. It is also, given how every other Sunday in 2026 has unfolded, exactly the type of race where the lights-out chaos his car keeps producing tends to make things worse.
