Ogier Supreme in the Rain as Rally Portugal Heads Into a Tense Super Sunday

Sebastien Ogier produced a masterclass in Saturday's rain at Rally Portugal to lead by 21.9 seconds heading into Super Sunday, while M-Sport's Rally1 debutants endured another nightmare day.

Key Takeaways

  • 1."Ah, you always can go faster, but the rally will not be decided in the first four stages this morning, I guess, but later this afternoon," the Belgian said.
  • 2."Just to reiterate, John and Shane are okay," the broadcast confirmed.
  • 3.With only 1.7 seconds covering Pajari and Solberg, and an Evans recovery sitting fifth, Sunday's Power Stage points are likely to play a major championship role even before any final-day surprises.

Sebastien Ogier carried a 21.9 second lead into Super Sunday at Rally Portugal after a Saturday in which the eight-time champion turned biblical rain and a slick gravel surface into a personal showcase.

The Toyota driver tightened his grip on the Vodafone-backed event with a string of measured stage times in conditions that caught out almost everyone else, with co-driver Vincent Landais reading notes through standing water and visibly worsening grip. By the end of stage 18 he was 21.9 seconds clear of Hyundai's Thierry Neuville, with Sami Pajari a further 3.9 seconds adrift in third.

WRC's coverage captured the response in the service park. "Sebastien Ogier has just put himself 16 seconds clear now of Thierry Neuville overall. It's a tour de force performance on that stage," the broadcast said as the Frenchman's gap continued to balloon. "This is an epic performance we're watching now. Conditions are changing, but this man is not letting up, not one bit."

The day's drama was supplied by Hyundai's Oliver Solberg, who briefly led the rally outright after a stunning 19.1 second stage win pushed him from fourth into the overall lead. "I think he's done it. He absolutely has done it," the broadcast called as Solberg crossed the line. The young Swede's day then unravelled with a puncture that cost him the lead and left him fourth overnight, ahead of championship leader Elfyn Evans.

"Ah, you always can go faster, but the rally will not be decided in the first four stages this morning, I guess, but later this afternoon," the Belgian said. After Solberg's brief excursion into the lead, he added with characteristic understatement, "It's probably the deciding stage of the day, but I did after my feelings, so not too bad."

Elsewhere in the Toyota camp, the rain played havoc with set-ups that had been honed for warmer, drier roads. One of the GR Yarises sounded uncertain at service.

"This morning, the morning loop was reasonable to be fair, but then the rain came and yeah, it didn't go as well as I hoped to be honest," the driver said. "The feeling was definitely not with us and I'm disappointed with how the afternoon went. The morning, it was fantastic. Really comfortable in the car, but maybe I changed a bit too much on the car in service and not so comfortable this afternoon."

Sammy Pajari, on his strongest WRC weekend in months, balanced ambition and pragmatism in third. "The morning started super well. Managed to take some stage win on the first stage of the morning. Super happy for that," he said. "Afternoon loop, the conditions were getting really intense, super super slippy, a lot of rain, and still we managed to stay away from the troubles and have the consistent speeds, also getting a little bit closer to the second position even."

M-Sport Ford's Rally1 weekend, meanwhile, fell apart for a second straight day. Jon Armstrong rolled out of the rally on a downhill stage, tagging the inside of a left-hander and pitching the Puma into a roll. "Just to reiterate, John and Shane are okay," the broadcast confirmed. Team-mate Josh McErlean and Owen Tracy went off twice in the same loop after getting stuck in deep mud at the Lousada superspecial.

Principal Richard Millener, while disappointed, remained confident his crews could rebuild for the final day.

"I'm sure that they will deliver a good performance tomorrow," he said.
